Adverse Event
What Is an Adverse Event?
An Adverse Event (AE) is any unwanted or unexpected medical occurrence experienced by a patient after using a medicine, medical product, or healthcare intervention.
An adverse event does not necessarily mean the product caused the event, but it is important to report it so that safety can be properly evaluated.
Examples of Adverse Events
Side effects such as nausea, headache, rash, or dizziness
Worsening of an existing medical condition
Unexpected symptoms after starting or stopping a medicine
Lack of expected effect from a medicine
Allergic reactions or sensitivity
Medication errors or misuse
Why Your Report Is Important
Reporting adverse events plays a critical role in protecting patients and improving healthcare outcomes.
Detect Safety Signals
Individual reports help identify patterns or trends that may indicate potential safety concerns. When similar events are reported, it allows healthcare companies and regulators to recognize early warning signals and take appropriate action.
Improve Product Information
Adverse event reports help enhance product labels, usage instructions, and safety warnings. This ensures that patients and healthcare professionals have the most accurate and up-to-date safety information.
Protect Others
By reporting an adverse event, you help prevent similar experiences for others. Your information contributes to safer use of medicines and supports informed decision-making for patients and healthcare providers.
Advance Medical Knowledge
Every report adds to the overall understanding of how medicines and healthcare products perform in real-world use. This knowledge supports ongoing research, better treatment strategies, and continuous improvement in patient care.
